The concept of identity is currently undergoing critical examination in various disciplines. Its ambiguity and the problematic tendency to essentialize through a defined notion of identity lead, on one hand, to a conscious avoidance of the term. On the other hand, the reference to concepts of identity and identity formation provides an important framework for marginalized communities to advocate for their right to define their own histories, memories, and legacies. The sixth volume of the publication series of the graduate college "Identity and Heritage" thus understands the concept of identity as a projection surface, through which groups and communities are constituted and can imagine commonalities in relation to spatial and material cultural heritage. The construction and definition of cultural heritage is crucial for understanding how identity is appropriated, negotiated, or asserted in social, political, and thus also physical spaces. The contributions in this volume critically engage with identity constructions and address current socio-political discourses surrounding heritage and space from the perspectives of various disciplines.
