Reduced cubes in steel and glass or expressive sculptural forms in exposed concrete - architecture from the 1940s to the 1970s fascinates many today. At the same time, it faces significant challenges. Some buildings from this era still seem too young to be recognized for their historical value. However, they are often either completely renovated or even demolished due to technical and energy deficiencies. So far, there has often been a lack of documentation that could serve as a basis for future construction interventions. Therefore, the Cantonal Heritage Preservation Office of Solothurn has taken it upon itself to compile an inventory of significant buildings from the period of 1940 to 1980. In light of the construction boom after World War II, they are confronted with overwhelming quantities. Thus, the focus is initially on the qualities of pioneering buildings. The book comprehensively presents the architecture of post-war modernism in the canton of Solothurn, showcases particularly significant examples, and documents all listed buildings.
