Product details
Volume 5 of the Excerpts from the Saxon Monastery Book contains contributions about the monasteries in Bautzen. The Saxon Monastery Book provides the first comprehensive account of all 80 monasteries, convents, and commanderies that existed in the Free State of Saxony until the Reformation or have survived as medieval foundations to this day. The Monastery Book is designed as a handbook that presents the spiritual institutions according to a uniform processing scheme, thereby enabling comparative analysis. The focus is on the history, architectural and art history, archaeology, and library history of these spiritual institutions, presented by 80 experts. All monastery articles are equipped with historical and current photographs, site plans, floor plans, and property maps. Extensive source and literature lists serve as a starting point for further research. The monasteries, convents, and commanderies in Saxony shaped the history of the region both locally and regionally, and they were also hubs of an international network of religious communal life. The Saxon Monastery Book demonstrates that nearly all important orders and religious communities of the Middle Ages established themselves and flourished here for centuries.
