Parallel to the official fashion scene, an alternative fashion movement emerged in the urban centers of East Germany during the 1980s, consisting of designers, models, photographers, and (survival) artists. As part of the diverse artistic subcultures of the East German Republic, this movement articulated a unique form of cultural dissent through fashion shows, performances, and fashion theaters. By creatively subverting the aesthetic and moral imperatives of the SED state, this fashion and its provocative presentation became the target of surveillance, repression, tolerance, and instrumentalization in the dictatorship, yet it could not be tamed by the authoritative structures. This volume provides a comprehensive cultural-historical insight into a vibrant parallel world that defied conformity, illustrated with photographs, interviews, and contemporary documents.
