The classical philologist Johannes Stroux (1886-1954) was the first regular rector of the University of Unter den Linden after its reopening in 1946 and the first president of the Academy of Sciences to achieve a prominent position in Berlin's post-war science policy. Renowned scientists shed light on the life of this Berlin personality in the academic world and his function and scope of action in the Soviet Socialist Republic of East Germany. Central aspects of Berlin's scientific history around the middle of the 20th century are also dealt with. The editor's close contact with the Stroux family makes it possible to consult documents and photographs that are otherwise not accessible. This results in an exciting interplay between the public and private person Johannes Stroux. The volume will also include personal documents, previously unpublished.
