Wars and violent conflicts between, as well as within, the city-states - the poleis - were a pervasive societal experience in classical Greece. A central aspect of this phenomenon was the struggle for freedom. The battle cry "Freedom to the Greek poleis!" emerged during the Persian Wars (499 - 479 BC) and was revived repeatedly thereafter - most recently in the defense against Macedonia (around 350 - 322 BC).
