Today, when one says "fairy tale," one must not only know the Brothers Grimm but must especially have read Basile. Giambattista Basile's "The Tale of Tales," published posthumously from 1634 to 1936, has become world-famous as the Pentamerone (Five-Day Work). However, Basile's global fame only reached its peak long after his death. Not only did the French fairy tale poet Charles Perrault know the Pentamerone, but Wieland also drew from it for his "Pervonte," and Brentano was inspired by Basile's texts for his "Italian Fairy Tales." The Brothers Grimm provided the first complete summary of its content. Hundreds of storytellers have orally presented Basile's types of fairy tales in ever-new variations up to our century.
