The symbol of the EU is the circle of stars. For a long time, we have seen this motif within the official rhetoric of the EU as a symbol of unity in diversity. However, today we must ask with greater seriousness: What keeps the stars together and prevents them from falling apart? Does Europe have a guiding vision? By drawing an analogy to the American Dream, Aleida Assmann unfolds the European Dream in this book, referring to four lessons that Europeans have learned from history. These lessons constitute the open project of Europe. Whether it has a future or not therefore depends, among other things, on whether these lessons continue to be recognized and implemented as a common foundational orientation.
