Ernst Schulins standard work, which is now being published in a revised edition brought up to date with the latest research, begins with a brief overview of historiography on the French Revolution and then provides a detailed account of the period from 1789 to the establishment of the First Republic in 1792. Only after familiarizing the reader with the events of the early revolutionary years does he describe the causes of the revolution in terms of economy and society, constitution and administration, as well as in the history of ideas and mentalities. External political influences are also taken into account. The final part of the book deals with the republican phase, the "Reign of Terror" from 1793/94, and the Directory period (1795-1799).
