Centers of sarcophagus production in the 3rd to 6th centuries AD were Rome, Constantinople, and Ravenna. Additionally, there are local workshops from the Roman provinces - ranging from Gaul through the Balkans to Asia Minor and Palestine. These Christian sarcophagi, of which 2,500 have been preserved, are documented for the first time in this volume and illustrated in a representative selection. Introductory chapters address the reuse of pagan examples and the distinction between pagan and Christian pieces. Following this, questions regarding form, materials used, manufacturing techniques, inscriptions, portraits, figurative representations, and iconographic programs are discussed across all groups. The largest section presents the main centers, to which the provinces are connected, characterizing the individual stylistic phases.
