Product details

Vittorio Hösle provides an overview of the history of German philosophy from the Middle Ages to the present in this book. He begins by discussing the legitimacy of separating the course of German philosophy from other European philosophical histories and concludes with a cautious skepticism regarding the survival of German philosophy in the 21st century. The unique path of German philosophy starts in the Middle Ages with Meister Eckhart and Nicolaus Cusanus. A new emphasis is introduced by the Reformation, which, due to its anti-philosophical polemics, allows for a new beginning in thought and produces the characteristic connection between philosophy and philology in Germany. Leibniz, Kant, and the foundation of the humanities in the late 18th century are prerequisites for the synthesis of the German tradition.
