It has long been a wish of the publisher to present a representative overview of Greek sculpture in the Handbook of Archaeology, especially since the standard work by Georg Lippold published in this series in 1950 is out of print. However, while working on the material, it became clear that the significantly increased number of monuments required a more extensive publication. Therefore, "Greek Sculpture" will now be published in three volumes. The first volume, presented here, covers the geometric and archaic periods, while the next two will focus on the classical and Hellenistic periods. The development of Greek sculpture, along with its materials and techniques, which are treated as essential factors in artistic creation, is presented as a continuous process across the various artistic epochs. Even the early artists of the 10th to 8th centuries.
