Alexander Demandt has completely revised his comprehensive scientific work on Late Antiquity and presents it in an expanded form reflecting the current state of research. In the second edition of his major work on Late Antiquity, Alexander Demandt places particular emphasis on a detailed overview of the sources, their scholarly editions, translations, and commentaries. Furthermore, he presents a depiction of the event and political history of Late Antiquity that has been changed in many ways compared to the first edition; he begins with the crisis of the Roman Empire under the soldier emperors (235 - 284) and describes the developments up to the end of Justinian's reign (565). He explains the internal conditions of the Empire - state, society, economy, education, cities, religion - and sheds light on the historiography of Late Antiquity.
