Product details

The discovery of Hildebrand Gurlitt's art collection after decades in hiding caused a worldwide scandal at the end of 2013. Until then, Gurlitt was known to very few. He was one of the key players in the multimillion-dollar trade of artworks that the Nazis confiscated from museums and looted in occupied territories. Meike Hoffmann and Nicola Kuhn tell the story of the colorful art dealer's life for the first time. As a pioneer of modern art, Hildebrand Gurlitt was highly admired in the 1920s. In 1930, he was dismissed as museum director when the right-wing opposition became too strong, and he lost his position again in 1933. However, shortly thereafter, he began his second rise as a collaborator and profiteer in National Socialism. He provided foreign currency to the German Reich through the sale of "degenerate art," moved to Paris, and established himself there.
