When Abba Naor is liberated on May 2, 1945, near Waakirchen, the just 17-year-old already knows more about death, despair, and human brutality than the battle-hardened American troops. He is 13 when his family is forced to move into the ghetto in Kaunas. His older brother Chaim is shot there by the SS. In 1944, the family is deported across the Memel River to the Stutthof concentration camp near Danzig. Abba is separated from his father and has to witness the transport of his mother and younger brother to Auschwitz-Birkenau. He never sees them again. Abba volunteers for the Kaufering I camp because he suspects his father is there. The eleven subcamps of the Dachau concentration camp near Kaufering/Landsberg were the most horrific in southern Germany. Approximately half of the 30,000 Jewish forced laborers for the German armaments industry perished.
