Product details

Avraham Barkai has traced the life path of Oscar Wassermann here - his beginnings as a banker at a private bank during the Empire, his Zionist commitment, his appointment to the board of Deutsche Bank, where he eventually rose to become its spokesperson, up to his dismissal in 1933 and his abrupt end. Oscar Wassermann (1869-1934) came from a long-established, wealthy Bavarian family, whose lineage can be traced back to the 17th century in the Jewish community of Regensburg. The bank A. E. Wassermann, founded by his family in 1850, quickly developed into one of the most respected Jewish private banks in Germany. Oscar Wassermann's successes as the head of the Berlin branch prompted the board of Deutsche Bank to appoint him to its executive level in 1912. Although he grew up in a strictly Orthodox household, he did not lead an Orthodox lifestyle himself.
