A State Without God is not a polemic, but rather a combative analysis. Horst Dreier's thesis is as follows: In modern democracy, the state must not identify with any particular religion, even if it is Christianity. Only in a state without God can all citizens live freely according to their quite different religious or other beliefs. A state without God does not mean: a world without God, nor: a society without God, and certainly not: a person without God. Rather, it means that the democracy of the Basic Law is entirely incompatible with any form of a state based on God, a theocracy, a sacred order, or a Christian state. Germany's development towards a multi-religious and multicultural society has created new areas of conflict among the followers of different faiths, as well as between them and the state.
