The Northwest Passage, a quasi-mythical waterway from the Atlantic to the Pacific along the Arctic coasts of America, inhabited by vanishing Inuit cultures and the ghosts of bearded, obsessed men who perished in search of this geographical grail due to hunger, hubris, and scurvy. Landscapes of grand emptiness, storm-tossed seas, brutal ice - the Northwest Passage remains an adventure, arduous and wondrous. In the summer of 2011, Captain Wolf Kloss took on this challenge with his Santa Maria Australis, and writer Tina Uebel sailed alongside him for three months. Where does the world end, and how far can one go to scratch at its edges? Does it even have edges? And what drives one to go there? Tina Uebel was exhausted and amazed, moved and amused.
