Giwi Margwelaschwili was born in 1927 as the son of Georgian emigrants in Berlin, and his first language was German. His mother suffered from depression and died when he was young. His father taught philosophy and Oriental studies and was involved in the Georgian resistance against the Soviet Union. In 1946, he was abducted by the Soviet secret police, the NKVD, along with his son Giwi. The father was murdered. Giwi Margwelaschwili was interned in Sachsenhausen and subsequently deported to Georgia. He has incorporated parts of his biography into his novels about Captain Wakusch. Jörg Sundermeier interviewed Margwelaschwili in the spring of 2016 over five days about his life and work; this interview is interspersed and supplemented with smaller excerpts from his work.
