The study focuses on the structure and function of justification practices in everyday conversations. It demonstrates, among other things, which forms of justifications speakers prefer to use in which contexts, for example, when they opt for a grammatically unmarked connection over a conjunction or another marked connection. Syntactic, semantic, prosodic, and action-related parameters are examined in their respective usage contexts. Beyond the empirical analysis, questions regarding the representation of linguistic units in grammar and lexicon are discussed.
