What we know about our society, indeed about the world we live in, we know through mass media. That the artist and radio play author Eran Schaerf is among those who like to quote this perhaps most famous sentence by Niklas Luhmann is not necessarily remarkable at first. However, anyone who engages with Schaerf's work might well choose Luhmann's dictum as a possible starting point for the FM Scenario project and come to the assessment that the artist has made nothing less than the reality of mass media the subject of his field research. A prerequisite for this is an understanding of mass media that does not reduce them to programs and technical distribution channels, but places them in the context of societal and social structures: In short, mass media create societal public spaces and fulfill needs.
