Territorial fragmentation, political diversity, and open borders create the framework for the development of the art landscape in Upper Swabia, shaped by external influences, exchange, and competition. Baroque art, with its wealth of outstanding buildings and artworks, became the epitome of Upper Swabia. After the decline of the baroque sacred landscape during the time of Napoleon, Upper Swabia opened up to the artistic influences of modernity only late and rather hesitantly.
