Gerhard Richter is one of the most significant artists of the 20th and early 21st centuries. He is primarily known for his monumental abstract and photorealistic works. This volume, featuring photographs by Benjamin Katz, provides a first glimpse into Richter's working methods as well as his artistic and conceptual processes. Photographer Benjamin Katz, who has been an active artist for over fifty years with works in the world's largest museums, had the opportunity to observe and capture on film the notoriously camera-shy painter, who turns 80 this year and shares a long-standing friendship with him, while he worked. Armed with two Leica compact cameras, Katz took thousands of extraordinary black-and-white portraits of Richter painting, sketching, and contemplating his work, of which 80 are now included in the catalog.
