Product details
The dictatorship in pause mode: City and Games in the summer of 1936. In the summer of 1936, Berlin is entirely focused on the Olympic Games. Tens of thousands flock to the German capital, which the National Socialists want to present as a cosmopolitan metropolis during these sixteen days. Oliver Hilmes follows prominent and completely unknown individuals, Germans and foreign guests, through the feverishly buzzing time of the Summer Games, skillfully weaving the events of these days into a panorama of a dictatorship in pause mode. The "Jews prohibited" signs have suddenly disappeared, and instead of the "Horst Wessel Lied," swing music fills the streets. For a brief moment, Berlin seems to be just another normal European metropolis, but in the background, the Nazi regime continues to work on perfecting oppression and driving the country into war. In "Berlin 1936," Oliver H. tells this story.
