Christa Wolf (1929-2011), one of the most distinguished German-language writers, and Gerhard Wolf (born 1928), author, editor, and publisher, led a life relationship of extraordinary productivity, integrated in family and circle of friends, in social, cultural-political, and above all literary contexts. The basis of their partnership, which they developed in the 1950s, remained sustainable for decades. Neither Christa nor Gerhard Wolf felt they had to take a back seat; they supported each other as a matter of course and could always rely on each other. They were both flexible and confident enough to defy classic gender roles. They read the same books, saw the same plays, discussed with mutual friends, and took similar positions on contemporary literature.
