Product details

Scheindl and Salomea tells the story of a Jewish family from Galician Lviv at the beginning of the 20th century. It is a tale of departure and great hopes. Against this backdrop, the author describes the tumultuous life of her mother, Scheindl, and her own childhood on the eve of World War II in Nazi Berlin. Declared dead by her strictly religious father for marrying the Russian-Jewish socialist Avram Genin in a Budapest prison against his wishes in 1916, Scheindl moves with her husband to Krakow and then to Berlin. There, in 1932, Salomea, the third daughter, is born. From 1936 onward, Scheindl struggles alone in the big city of Berlin until she manages to escape to Australia with her daughters in May 1939. Unlike the family members who remained in Lviv, they manage to evade the impending danger.
