In the last three decades, the relationship between work and private life in Germany has changed significantly. The traditional connection between the male breadwinner model and standard employment has largely become obsolete. Both women and men today have a high propensity to work, pursue diverse career paths, and associate their profession with more than just earning an income. In the modern workplace, they encounter both new opportunities and altered demands: increased flexibility in working hours, high job autonomy, and telecommuting on one hand; and high work pressure, rising job insecurity, and excessively long working hours on the other. This book examines how well employees in Germany manage to balance work and private life and what working conditions contribute to this.
