Who am I? This was the guiding question for the psychoanalyst Erik H. Erikson in his work on identity. Today, it is more difficult than ever for many to answer this question. Especially the children and grandchildren of migrants, such as those from Turkey, often face questions regarding their identity and sense of belonging. For example: How do you identify? As German or as Turkish? In which language do you dream? Where do you feel at home, in Germany or in Turkey? Or more directly: Will you ever return to your homeland? My questions to the young people were: How would you define yourself? Who, how, and what are you? How would you like to be seen by your classmates, teachers, friends, bosses, parents, etc.? The answers were very clear: I want to be seen as Mustafa, as Handan, fundamentally as a subject, as a person.
