The residential studio at Drakeplatz, which Joseph Beuys (1921-1986) moved into in 1961 with his small family after being appointed as a professor of monumental sculpture at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf, was a magical place. Here, the work on groundbreaking art concepts intertwined with child-rearing; cooking and discussions took place, and family and unfamiliar visitors stood in awe before sculpturally stunning creations. From here, the influence of Beuys' artistic and humanistic vision eventually spread throughout the world, until the pressure of the outside world became too great and the family had to move to a neighboring house.
