This paper presents a methodology for assessing the substitution risk of manufacturing systems. First, alternative manufacturing systems are identified, taking into account the manufacturing history. Subsequently, an evaluation of the manufacturing systems is conducted for both existing and likely future product programs. The practical applicability of the methodology is demonstrated through a case study from the automotive industry.
