R. Jay Wallace explores in his Frankfurt Lectures the question of how morality can be understood as an independent area of "bilateral normativity." Such "bilateral normativity," which occurs in agreements, contracts, or promises as well as in familial relationships, is, in his opinion, specific because it connects two individuals in such a way that their respective normative situations can only be understood in relation to the circumstances of the other person. Wallace demonstrates that these situations are genuinely moral in his text, which opens up exciting perspectives on the complex concept of normativity.
