Since humans have been creating images, their work has also been a subject of these images. These pictures can provide particularly significant insights into cultural and political perceptions of work, as well as conflicts and discourses. The volume offers a glimpse into image productions spanning from the Middle Ages to the present, primarily in Europe (one chapter focuses on the USA). Organized by thematic fields, it presents relevant examples from a collection of a total of 30,000 recorded works of art. The book is not a specialized scientific study but is aimed at a broad audience: art historians interested in iconography, those working in cultural, labor, and industrial history, sociologists, and last but not least, the general public to whom these images were universally directed.
