She is known by two names: as the photographer Marianne Breslauer and as the art dealer Marianne Feilchenfeldt. In both fields, she was avant-garde: she was among the first young women to leave the studios in the 1920s to take portraits in unposed situations, work as reporters, and photograph during travels. Later, after World War II, she became the first woman to engage in art trading at the highest international level. Marianne Feilchenfeldt was able to complete her memoirs shortly before her death in 2001. In vividly narrated chapters, she reflects on her eventful life spanning nine decades: her childhood and youth in Berlin's Grunewald as the daughter of a prominent architect, her first experiences as a photographer in Paris in the late 1920s, where she worked in Man Ray's studio, among other places.
