Why do we trust photographs when it comes to identity? Bernd Stiegler poses this question in light of the widely lamented flood of images that are easily manipulated or even generated by AI. It seems that identity cannot exist without its media validation. When examining the political relationship between identity and media, the commercial offerings of the metaverse and the aggressive presence of the New Right on social media channels quickly come into focus, revealing themselves as a battleground for identity. Today, we face the dual demand of conforming to the standards and formats of digital platforms to be noticed while simultaneously standing out as unique. These poles of typification and individualization are already evident in 19th-century photography, where techniques like Bertillonage standardize the photographic documentation of "criminals" and the blending of individual photos creates "types" meant to illustrate notions of "race" and "essence." At the same time, with the advent of carte de visite photos, which allow for an unprecedented control over one's appearance and role-playing, there emerges a playful engagement with one's image. In contrast, the new right's fixation on identity connects to images that are all too familiar from history. Bernd Stiegler succinctly highlights the conflicts and promises that govern image politics today.
