Education currently means many things: acquiring key qualifications, promoting competencies, lifelong learning, and utilizing human resources. The substantial aspect of education is increasingly disappearing from the concept of education, as well as from the theory and practice of extracurricular political education for youth. This development is mostly welcomed, demanded, and supported. In contrast, Alexander Lahner convincingly argues that the thoughts and intentions of classical educational philosophies deserve more than just academic attention or historical remembrance. He demonstrates how it can be practically possible to turn against the dominant anti-enlightenment task assignments of the modern zeitgeist and to realize a political education that initiates processes of enlightenment.
