This textbook aims to facilitate students' entry into the fields of forensics and bioinformatics alike. Through a fictional case that runs throughout the entire book, bioinformatics and its fundamentals are applied to the field of forensics. The case covers a variety of biological traces and their classical analysis, defining new areas of action in bioinformatics and forensics. This work presents various aspects of forensics in a bioinformatics context: genetic fingerprinting, analysis at the sequence rather than profile level, fingerprint analysis of disease-related or genetically induced changes, investigations into a person's phenotype, fundamental insights into wound healing, and blood aging both in vivo and ex vivo. This book highlights the necessity of expanding forensics with additional areas of knowledge and provides insights into the field.
