In bipolar affective disorder, periods of depression alternate with euphoric (or irritable) phases. Mood, drive, and activity are distinctly different in the manic and depressive phases. This evidence-based treatment manual, primarily designed for outpatient individual therapy, includes 25 therapy sessions: fundamentals of the disorder, diagnostics, and comorbidity, presentation of integrative psychological models of bipolar disorders, pharmacotherapy, as well as specific features of treating bipolar disorders, and specialized therapeutic components for addressing acute depressive and manic symptoms. The focus is on relapse prevention, with additional consideration of other therapeutic elements: building skills such as emotion recognition and mindfulness, problem-solving, and communication.
