Jeff Lemire, the Canadian specialist in quirky stories with depth, creates with "Black Hammer" a tribute to the great superheroes of comic history, where the love for the genre shines through on every page. At the same time, the series serves as a farewell to the naivety of modern superheroes, managing without the familiar clichés of morally conflicted anti-heroes and reluctant avengers. The artwork by Dean Ormston, who has worked with Neil Gaiman on "Sandman" and illustrates its spin-off "Lucifer," feels both familiar and alien, perfectly reflecting the inner tension of Lemire's vision.
