Product details
Charlie Chaplin, Luis Buñuel, Lars von Trier, Takeshi Kitano: The theme of blindness runs throughout film history. Blind protagonists serve various functions. On one hand, they reflect the specific perceptual possibilities of cinema as well as technical innovations (such as the transition from silent films to sound films); on the other hand, they raise questions about the relationship between body, culture, and disability. The contributions in this volume connect film aesthetic issues with approaches from Disability Studies and explore the iconographies, codes, and narratives of blindness since the beginnings of cinema. It is not only about how blindness is represented in film, but also about the power of gazes, viewer and camera positions, and voyeurism. The focus is on the "blind spots" of cinematic perception.
