In tireless work over ten years, the pharmacist Johannes Wilhelm Weinmann, born in Regensburg in 1683, gathered all the botanical knowledge of the Baroque period and created an impressive four-volume compendium with 1,025 copperplate illustrations. The new comparative picture book selects from this unjustly forgotten bibliophilic cultural treasure those plants that were once and still can be found in the Vienna Woods. Original photographs and brief botanical explanations are juxtaposed with the corresponding copperplate illustrations and excerpts from Baroque texts. Capturing nature in vibrant colors was the goal then as it is now, and this is now beautifully achieved through color photographs that make the plants truly shine against a black background. Thus, the work bridges a significant bibliophilic cultural treasure.
