Twelve farmers' wives, born between 1907 and 1932, write about their lives. Their memories make it clear: flexibility has always been demanded of women, and juggling multiple responsibilities has been part of their everyday life for a long time. The personal narratives also provide insight into the profound structural changes in agriculture in the 20th century and their impact on those affected. In this book, farmers' wives share their diverse activities in home and farm, their family life, experiences of birth and death, and the relationships between young and old, women and men. Work processes, customs, and festivals that traditionally marked the annual cycle are described, as well as the exceptional situations of the war and post-war years. The modernization, the expansion of agricultural enterprises, and issues related to farm succession, sometimes leading to the abandonment of the business, are also addressed.
