In the sculptural tradition of modern times, pedestals were an element that was often formally and conceptually integrated into the design. Long neglected by art history, sculpture since the early modern period has developed numerous innovative approaches to the placement and presentation of sculptures, among which the complete abandonment of a pedestal is only the most radical form. The contributions compiled in this anthology connect to current international research that focuses on the pedestal in its complex formal and content-related relationships to the artwork in new ways, making it the subject of art historical investigations.
