Dictatorial rule is primarily based on physical violence. However, it also employs linguistic means to assert and establish its claim to power. The Nazi dictatorship is a particularly striking example in this regard. The new book by linguist Horst Dieter Schlosser focuses on the language under the swastika and its mechanisms for maintaining power. He particularly highlights the interplay between linguistic discrimination and the annihilation of actual and presumed opponents of the regime, and also comprehensively presents the positions of the resistance against the regime. Schlosser's analysis provides a profound basis for understanding the mass effectiveness of propaganda and a foundation for countering it with linguistic means.
