The Prussian nobleman Wilhelm von Humboldt (1767-1835) is primarily associated today with the concept of "education." He is regarded as the founder of the humanistic gymnasium and the founder of the University of Berlin, which was later renamed Humboldt University. Whether as an education reformer, scholar, language philosopher, or politician, Humboldt was deeply influenced by a profoundly humanistic view of humanity and society. His belief in the individual and the free development of one's abilities shaped his entire thinking and actions. He lived among Goethe and Schiller, whose shared love for the ancient Greeks was defining for the Weimar Classicists. Humboldt was convinced that significant insights cannot be conveyed through a single work.
