Product details
In his book on W.G. Sebald's (1944-2001) novel Austerlitz, Christoph Steker explores the work of an author who has rapidly become canonical in recent years and sheds light on a new facet: a Bohemian topography of remembering, forgetting, and commemorating the Holocaust - in Theresienstadt, Marienburg, and Prague. The study illustrates how, in Austerlitz, the construction of memories is translated into spatial formations and how spatial constellations are staged as memory-constituting constellations. By introducing the concept of "memory space," two currents of culturally oriented literary studies are brought together. In this way, the potential of fictional narratives to shape and locate individual and collective identities is highlighted. With this volume, Christoph Steker enriches Sebald research with an innovative contribution.
