Product details

In this book, Erik Bosch explores the question of autonomy and boundaries in social work. Through practical examples, the author demonstrates how social work professionals should behave in the tension between autonomy and the need for protection and support. When is it permissible for a helper to intervene in the life of a client, possibly even against their (sense of) self-determination and independence? How can this be justified responsibly? Ethics involves a systematic reflection on moral questions. How careful is a professional in their dealings with clients, but also with themselves? Me and my counterpart: Is it a good relationship? The tension between autonomy versus the need for protection and support always points back to ourselves: to our norms and values, to our developmental history. At the end of the book, the author presents a step-by-step plan as a framework, a guide for methodical approaches in situations of moral dilemmas. This framework enables professionals to reflect on themselves, their team, and their organization. The case studies address questions related to sexuality, dying, aggression, and decision-making freedom (up to what limits), as well as the role of professionals within the team. The book is aimed at staff members, students from all areas of social work, and anyone who wants to learn to engage critically with clients, as well as with themselves and their colleagues in the team and the organization they are part of. Questions for reflection on personal situations are a helpful aid in discussing this very complex topic. Organizations and institutions can use the book to assess whether their guiding principles are upheld at all levels.
