This book offers a completely new approach to Theodor Storm's novella "The Rider on the White Horse." The story of the rise and fall of the North Frisian dyke master Hauke Haien, who sacrifices his life during a storm surge on the North Sea coast because his ambitious dyke project has failed, is presented here in comic form as a graphic novel. The hand-colored interpretation of the novella serves as an authentic complement to the literary original. Extensive research by the illustrator Jens Natter at the original locations of the novella and in North Frisian museums allows for a reliable depiction of the events of that time. In particular, the representation of costumes, houses, and landscapes transports the viewer directly to North Friesland in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Naturally, the comic medium means that the original material must be condensed.
