The aim is to subject the so-called "negative therapeutic reaction," which is discussed as a phenomenon that questions and undermines the psychoanalytic process, to critical examination, appreciation, and revision in the sense of a reconceptualization. For the "negative therapeutic reaction" indeed has a quite "positive," communicative side when it is understood. Schmithüsen explores the subtle, extremely difficult-to-grasp dynamics of approach and withdrawal between patient and psychotherapist through detailed case studies and provides a well-founded reconceptualization for treatment techniques.
