Like parents, grandparents also have a significant influence on the psychological development of children. Negative attachment experiences with parents can be compensated for or mitigated by positive experiences with grandparents. Meier illustrates through clinical examples how grandparent-grandchild relationships can affect a child's psyche both positively and negatively, and how this is reflected in psychotherapies and psychoanalyses. Drawing on Analytical Psychology and Jung's theory of archetypes, Meier employs an intersubjective approach in her therapeutic method and also incorporates insights from Bowlby's concept of internal working models, the Jungian concept of complexes, as well as studies by Stern and his research group on moments of presence.
