On November 10, 1944, thirteen people were publicly hanged in Cologne-Ehrenfeld without charge or trial. Among them were six youths, including the symbolic figure Bartholomäus Schink. Most belonged to the opposition group known as the Edelweisspiraten. After the war, they were stigmatized for decades as criminals or wayward delinquents. Journalist and author Alexander Goeb documents their resistance, the persecution by the Nazis, and the scandalous treatment of the victims after 1945, until they were finally officially recognized as resistance fighters. The public execution of thirteen youths and adults on November 10, 1944, in Cologne was one of the countless acts of violence by the Nazi regime. The murdered individuals were part of the "Ehrenfeld Group," which included the 23-year-old escaped concentration camp inmate Hans Steinbrück, as well as the youths Bartholomäus Schink, Franz Rheinberger, and Gustav Berme.
